Born in Takoma Park, Maryland, I was raised in the suburbs of Washington, DC. My family was far from wealthy. We lived in very modest housing. We were fortunate to have had the basics, but that's it. There were financial struggles, seemingly impossible obstacles, numerous setbacks, and many challenges during my years as a child and teen. A few bad decisions of my own, as a teen, certainly did not help matters.
I challenged every setback, mightily moved the obstacles, and in the end, I won the struggles and beat the odds. Overcoming life's challenges has made me the man I am today. A man of faith. A man of hope. A man of courage. A bold, daring, and resilient go-getter who believes that nothing is impossible. I have reached many milestones that people told me were not possible.
In July 1992, close friends introduced me to my beautiful bride, Tracey Lynn Smith. In October 1993, she said 'I do'. Currently, we have two thriving adult children. We live in the city limits of Gaithersburg, Maryland, named 2016's most diverse city in America. A great place to live, work, and play!
I have dedicated my entire career to public service, including federal and local government. Throughout my career, most of my service has been in hands-on positions within the community. I love it! It is my honor to serve others, help improve services to residents, and ensure community needs are met. Currently, I serve in a senior management role within one of the largest, most highly educated, wealthiest, and most diverse communities in the U.S., populated by more than one million residents, located just outside of Washington, DC.
Overall, I am passionate about community. I am a dedicated volunteer. I strive daily to lead with imagination, insight and boldness, presenting a challenge that calls forth the best in people and brings them together around a shared sense of purpose. I am fully immersed in community life!
